Does Your Little One Have Pronation Problems?

  • When your child stands barefoot, you might notice their ankles rolling inward. This inward movement, also known as pronation, over-pronation, or flat feet, is caused by the heel bone (calcaneus) tilting inward. This inward tilt flattens the natural arch of the foot and shifts their body weight to the inner part. While it appears to be a foot issue, it actually starts in the heel.

It's important to remember that some inward ankle roll or pronation is natural in young children. Their bodies are constantly developing, and a slight wobble while standing or walking slightly on the inside of their foot isn't a cause for alarm.

However, if the inward roll seems excessive and / or your child experiences pain, gets tired easily, seems clumsy / trips and falls frequently, or shows developmental or gross motor delays, it's best to consult a pediatrician. They can help determine the cause and recommend the next steps, which might include physical therapy in addition to orthotics.
